May 08, 2007 - Homeless man dubbed Saint Aaron by village voice media raises 1.5 million treatments of De-worming medication for Haiti.
At 2 cents a treatment a life can be saved!! So why are governments not doing it?
Planting Peace and the Worm Project is proud to announce that we have raised 1.5 million treatments of De-worming medication for the poor of Haiti. This comes after much hard work, and even eleven days of fasting to help raise funds. This De-worming Campaign more than doubles the United Nation's previous effort of 700,000 treatments.
“This project is for the children that the world has forgotten” Say’s Aaron Jackson Planting Peace founder who currently resides in a homeless shelter. 80% of Haiti’s eight million people are infected with intestinal worms according to the U.N. These worms eat up to 20% of a Child's nutritional intake a day. We feel the fact that Haiti has such a high rate of infection goes hand in hand with it being the fourth hungriest country in the world. According to U.N figures, we calculate that every dollar contributed to De-worming in Haiti will result in between 200 and 300 pounds of food added to the nutritional intake of Haiti’s people. Another plus is that De-worming doesn't create food dependency which is a major problem in Haiti and other nutritionally deprived nations. The Homeless Voice of Hollywood, FL sponsored Haiti’s infamously grim slum, Cite Soleil and The First Presbyterian Church also of Hollywood sponsored 150,000 HIV Infected people. The medication will be distributed by Planting Peace Relief workers and other NGO’s willing to lend a hand. Orphanages and schools have already started being de-wormed.
De-worming is so vital for the health of Haiti. At two cents a treatment the price of a candy bar can save the life of fifty children. Aaron went on to say “We can not wait for governments to bring help to the people; we must do it ourselves.”
