April 29, 2009 - Hollywood Camera Work (www.hollywoodcamerawork.us) founder and creator Per Holmes, announced today the launch of his new DVD course titled Visual Effects for Directors. The 7 DVD set covers everything you need to know as a Director or a DP about shooting visual effects, from green screen, virtual sets, 3D, camera tracking, and motion control, to character animation, motion capture, crowd replication, digital set extension, VFX cinematography, compositing, and much more. For many Directors and DPs, the course will fill a void by providing them with a solid understanding of the visual effects process.
Visual Effects For Directors is the result of 4 years of production, and is completely unique, in that it’s about understanding exactly what to do on the set, instead of how to “fix it in post”. The goal is for Directors and DPs to have a solid grasp of the VFX process, so that fewer mistakes are made, and more of the budget ends up in front of the camera.
The course covers everything from visual effects basics to advanced techniques. While part of the DVD series is geared towards high-budget shooting, the majority of it is exactly about how to do things like blockbuster green screen for practically no money. For example, the green screen cyc stage used in the course was built, painted and lit for less than $700, and it’s shown how it’s done.
"I wanted to create this course because I see a lot of Directors and DPs struggling with basic issues of visual effects and making completely unnecessary mistakes. I'm personally a little bit of a nerd, so I've always stood with a leg in each world, which has helped me tremendously, and I wanted to give everyone that same advantage," says Per Holmes.
