History Now! Widget Launched

History joins the Widget Age and adds a much needed application to digital humanities. Immediately available to download and use on a variety of blogging platforms it aims to offer a means of connecting the multitude of history sites that currently exist.

(1888PressRelease) February 23, 2008 - 2008 is certain to become the 'Year of the Widget' and another contribution to this wave of inventive applications is the History Now! Widget.

Launched in February 2008, it is an off-shoot project of the History Nexus website.

History Nexus was created in November 2007 with the express intent of creating an interactive hub for history websites and blogs across the net.

The aim of the Widget is, like the History Nexus website itself, to connect the various history sites together and give everybody more exposure and traffic in the process.

The Widget can be placed on any blogger platform or the code can be grabbed and inserted into a website. It is even possible to add it to a MySpace or Facebook profile.

The creator of the History Now! Widget and webmaster of History Nexus, Andy Walpole, said:

“The internet just becomes more interesting every year. In this particular case I used the Yahoo Pipes service to mash-up various RSS feeds of blogs and sites submitted to History Nexus.

“It was Tim O'Reilly who described Yahoo Pipes as 'a milestone in the history of the internet' and this amazingly adaptive service really is a blessing for so many different net communities.

“The history internet network is very vibrant but also quite fragmented. The History Now! Widget provides a means of bringing together the different strands into one central area

“The vast majority of history sites are created because of enthusiasm for the subject rather than monetary gain. Advertising on a history site will pay for server costs, but no more.

“Consequently, webmasters and writers don’t have money to spend on advertising; and, what’s more, most only have a rudimentary knowledge of SEO.

“So how are web users going to find history sites? In truth, with difficulty, which is why the History Now! Widget was created.

“There are lots of history enthusiasts out there and now they can play a part in promoting the subject on their social networking sites or blogs."

The History Now! Widget is very attractive and easy to install. It comes in either Javascript of Flash, and can easily be placed onto any website or blog. Experience of coding and website design is not necessary.

It is supported on the following platforms: MySpace, Facebook, Blogger, TypePad, WordPress, LiveJournal, Tagged Multiply, Freewebs, Blogger Post, iGoogle, Netvibes, Pageflakes, Hi5, Piczo, Orkut, Hi5 (OpenSocial) and Ning.

If you would like to be included in the History Now! Widget then sign-up at History Nexus and submit your site.
