Historic Park Pavilion Theatre Set To Be Renovated In Lisdoonvarna

Minister of State Mr. Tony Killeen has learned that an announcement regarding the final approval of EUR1.27m for Lisdoonvarna's only community centre will shortly be made.

(1888PressRelease) August 23, 2007 - Lisdoonvarna, County Clare, IRELAND, 22nd Aug 07 - Minister of State Mr. Tony Killeen has learned that an announcement regarding the final approval of EUR1.27m for Lisdoonvarna's only community centre will shortly be made by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism.

The Clare T.D. said the Lisdoonvarna Fáilte project, which involves the restoration and refurbishment of the town's historic park pavilion theatre, would contribute greatly to community life when completed.

Lisdoonvarna's Park Pavilion Theatre was built in 1913 to provide entertainment for visitors to the North Clare town's famed spa well.

According to Minister Killeen, "By the turn of the 19th century Lisdoonvarna was a flourishing spa town and tourist destination. The theatre pavilion played a major role in the development of the country's only active spa town, which is why I am delighted that the facility is shortly to be renovated and refurbished. It is essential that this landmark in the early development of the tourism in rural Ireland is preserved for future generations."

"The anticipated announcement by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism represents the final approval of funds, which have been sought by members of the local community since 2001. Besides the local sports complex there is no formal community centre in Lisdoonvarna. Therefore, the provision of funding underlines the significance of developing a theatre and community centre", he said.

Minister Killeen explained that the Park Pavilion Theatre forms part of overall plans to develop comprehensive public facilities in the town.

He continued, "I have spoken with the Chairperson of Lisdoonvarna Fáilte Joe Garrihy who has informed me that the development will complement existing plans to establish a children's playground, community sports field and athletics sports track and a community crèche catering for up to 50 children."

"The North Clare Sports and Amenity Park project has already been approved EUR2.5m by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism; the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government; the Department of Health and Children; and Clare County Council. It is anticipated that these much-needed facilities will be completed by early summer 2008", stated Minister Killeen.
