Historic Chesterwood Carves Out New Ways to Enjoy Sculptures with Cell Phone

Chesterwood’s Beautiful Garden Scenery is a Sight to See and Hear.

(1888PressRelease) June 26, 2009 - SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.- Guide by Cell Inc., the nation’s leading mobile technology provider for nonprofit organizations, announced that its cell phone audio guide service is being used at the annual Contemporary Sculpture at Chesterwood. The cell phone audio guide service is a key part of the Chesterwood walking tour offering visitors instant access to lively and informative recordings about sculptures on display. Visitors to Chesterwood will behold a most memorable visual and auditory exhibit experience among one of Massachusetts’s most historic and sumptuous garden settings.

Chesterwood, a country home, studio and the gardens of sculptor Daniel Chester French (1850-1931), has hosted an annual sculpture exhibit since 1978. The new cell phone audio tour is an ideal opportunity for Chesterwood visitors to view the garden exhibit and hear about it too. The audio tour includes recorded commentary by each artist whose work is represented in the exhibit. Recordings by artists provide an informative perspective about the sculptures they’ve created, leaving visitors with a broad understanding about the sculptures displayed and the inspiration behind them.

Visitors wishing to know more about the artists represented in this year’s exhibit will find the process as simple as viewing a sign that corresponds to a display, dialing the number listed on the sign, and then listening to the recording, using their own phone.

“We wanted to improve the visitor's experience and their understanding about contemporary sculpture and the specific artists,” said Janet Cathcart, Chesterwood Director of Development. The exhibition is spread out over a large expanse of land, and it isn't practical to have traditional descriptive material available at the installation sites. Non-representational sculpture often leaves visitors wondering about the artist's concept. The application provided by Guide by Cell gives the artist an opportunity to address visitor’s questions in a personal way.”

“There is a rich and important history at Chesterwood,” said David Asheim, Founder and President of Guide by Cell Inc. “We are so pleased that the Chesterwood is using our technology to help fulfill their goal of educating visitors about sculptures and entertaining them through such a unique audio tour.”
