Detroit, MI (1888PressRelease)
April 28, 2008 - Legendary Hip Hop Pioneer KRS-One will not appear during the Detroit, Michigan “Stop the Violence” Weekend scheduled for May 2-4 2008. This decision came in the wake of the rap star being injured by a bottle thrown from the crowd during the New Haven, Connecticut concert on April 21 2008. KRS-One along with The Legendary Grandmaster Jay and Kurtis Blow was originally scheduled to speak to students at three of Detroit’s middle and high schools prior to a press conference to address the recent increases in gang behavior and violence involving Detroit’s youth. They were also scheduled to address the 3000 member congregation of The Perfecting Church on Sunday May 4, 2008 which is pastored by Marvin Winans. Hip Hop Pioneers Kurtis Blow and Grandmaster Jay will continue with these engagements. Event organizer Marshelle Lumas of Infinity Solutions stated “It is unfortunate that a senseless act of violence such as this has caused a ripple affect for those who need to hear this message of hope and inspiration from the very role models they follow.”
The Better Detroit Youth Movement had been working with The Stop the Violence Movement to assist Detroit youth in making better choices, channeling aggression into positive efforts and community activism. The Stop the Violence Movement was originally formed by KRS One in 1988 in response to the escalating violence in urban communities.
