June 26, 2009 - SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Guide by Cell, the nation’s leading mobile technology provider for nonprofit organizations, announced that its cell phone audio guide service is being included as part of the new Tree Museum in the Bronx, New York opening this month. Unlike any other, the Tree Museum is comprised entirely of trees situated along a 100-year old boulevard, the Grand Concourse, where visitors use cell phones to discover what the trees have to say about the history of the area, as well as, its vibrant present and future.
The cell phone audio guide provides a perspective from celebrities to average New Yorkers who have had a special relationship with the Bronx, and in particular the Grand Concourse.
“We wanted the trees to be the storytellers,” said Katie Holten, the artist who conceptualized the idea after competing for an art commission to commemorate the centennial of the Concourse. “Incorporating an audio guided aspect to this project made it jell, because the voices, stories, and perspectives are all so diverse and interesting and yet they all have relevance to the Concourse.,”
The Tree Museum spotlights 100 trees, each of which is included in the cell phone audio guided tour. For locals or tourists, the tour creates an appreciation for the Concourse, the sheer beauty of the grove of trees, as well as a context for the area within the Bronx. Visitors will glean many events and experiences that the Concourse has witnessed through the audio guide from the relevance of immigrating to the Bronx to the sheer joy of playing Afro Puerto Rican music in the area.
“The Tree Museum really speaks volumes about the historic, present and future Concourse, and with the help of Guide by Cell and its wonderful technology, it fulfills this job perfectly,” Holten added.
“Guide by Cell often collaborates with extremely interesting projects and exhibits,” stated David Asheim, President and Founder of Guide by Cell Inc. “This has been one of the more creative and dynamic projects we have witnessed.. Adults and children, botanists and lovers of history, will be excited about visiting and hearing about this historic and ever-evolving section of the Bronx. This visit is not to be missed.”
