May 14, 2009 - In a place ravaged by war, Harshada Wagner knows a lot about finding peace. This meditation teacher, writer, and group facilitator was classically trained in the traditions of Yoga, Vedanta, and Tantric Shaivism. Now, in light of the recent tragedy at Camp Liberty in Bagdad, Harshada is offering training in these techniques to the military.
“Simple meditation techniques can be taught to troops pre and post deployment as a means for them to work out their own kinks. It falls short of going to the clinic and being diagnosed with a disorder and medicated, but it is a whole lot better than simply "sucking it up", said Harshada.
Sergeant John Russell, a US soldier who had done three tours of duty in Iraq, has been charged over a shooting spree that left five comrades dead at a stress clinic in Baghdad. Russell had sought treatment there by his superiors because of concern over his emotional state.
For the past four years, Harshada has been working with Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) veterans offering meditation as a way for them to undo some of their combat stress and trauma. “I'm not saying that meditation is the solution but it may be one remedy that could make a huge difference. It's not for everybody, but for many of our troops, it may be just the right medicine,” Harshada remarked.
This month, Harshada’s meditation tour visits Louisville, Kentucky where he’ll offer a free meditation workshop for OIF/OEF vets and active duty military personnel. “We're hoping to get a big response from Ft. Knox”, he concludes.
