July 09, 2009 - CINCINNATI — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, announces the sale and delivery of three radio broadcast transmitters to Bible Broadcasting Network, a noncommercial Christian radio network with more than 135 outlets in the U.S. and more than 90 outlets in Central and South America. The longtime Harris transmission customer will install two Harris® ZX® low-power transmitters at FM stations in Masontown, Pa. (ZX5000), and Winder, Ga. (ZX2000); and a DAX5™ AM transmitter in Medellin, Colombia, by early fall 2009.
According to Ron Muffley, network engineering manager for Bible Broadcasting Network, he and his engineers were impressed by the power output and modular design of the ZX low-power transmitters, as well as the compact construction that simplifies self-installation.
"In my evaluation, I was amazed at the amount of power that is available from such a small footprint," said Muffley. "We can utilize the ZX in an existing rack rather than drop a complete cabinet in facilities of limited space. We also have a large fleet of Harris Z-Series transmitters throughout the network, and it is helpful that we can utilize interchangeable spare parts between the two designs. Both transmitters are built very solidly, and the similar design breeds familiarity in maintenance. We also use the Harris DigitCD® exciter with both models, and we're extremely pleased with its consistency."
While Bible Broadcasting Network remotely monitors its U.S. station transmitters, the company typically assigns local engineers to inspect and maintain the transmitters at its South and Central American facilities. Muffley had found the DAX5 AM transmitter to be a consistent performer at three of his other Latin America AM stations and quickly opted to install a new DAX5 at the Medellin station that the network recently purchased.
"It has been particularly advantageous to be able to just drop in the transmitter, turn it on, make our final parameter changes in the RF and audio chains and then leave the site with the expectation it will provide exactly what we need without daily, weekly or monthly intervention," said Muffley. "We also like the sound of the DAX5. You can compare several different AM transmitters, and each produces a different sound. Also, the DAX5 provides consistent contour coverage through all four seasons, even with some changes in ground conductivity. We are very happy with our Harris transmitters and technical support, and it has been a joy to work with our Harris sales representative."
