October 30, 2009 - The executives highlighted in the September/October 2009 issue represent a range of industries, experiences and styles, and each contributed an essay focused on mentoring and leadership. All FORTUNE 500 companies were invited to showcase one of their leading women executives in this year's issue.
"Reading these executives' essays uncovers a wealth of knowledge on how to be successful both professionally and personally, and it's absolutely thrilling to see that these organizations are setting the precedence for featuring their women leaders," said James Rector, publisher. "Their profiles reveal real women with real stories to tell, and they are told in their own words."
Bortner's essay discusses her philosophy of living each day as if it were your last, and the lessons she has learned in her career. "One significant lesson I now embody both personally and professionally is to be a life-long learner," she wrote. "Be curious...challenge...ask questions! Stretch yourself in ways you could never imagine. Understand that in every endeavor there is the opportunity to enrich your own life and the lives of others."
"The leadership exhibited by Andrea and other successful women professionals at Harris is key to the success of our company, and her selection for this recognition exemplifies the positive results that come from an organization's commitment to diversity," said Jeff Shuman, vice president of Human Resources and Corporate Relations for Harris.
Bortner joined Harris in 2005 as vice president, Talent Management. She began her career in human resources as a corporate recruiter and has held positions of increasing responsibility in Human Resources, including recruitment and placement specialist, director of Human Resources, Organizational Development vice president, and executive coach.
Prior to joining Harris, Bortner served in a broad range of roles, including consultant for executive coaching with Insight Into Action, Inc., and human resources positions with Electronic Data Systems (EDS), Georgetown University and Hospital, General Medical, Square D Company, and Pepsico, Inc. She also served as vice president of human resources and vice president of organizational development and training for GAP.
Bortner has a B.A. degree in industrial organizational psychology from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, and an M.B.A. in organizational development from the University of Southern California. She is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management, Executive Networks and Organizational Development Network.
