April 22, 2008 - As the only award show honoring the world’s top celebrity impersonators and tribute artists, it is only fitting that the 17th Annual The Reel Awards™ hosts a record-breaking attempt involving a star impersonated more than any other in showers and showrooms throughout the world: Elvis Presley.
On Sunday, May 25th, 2008 judges from the Guinness Book for World Records will be at Las Vegas, Nevada’s premier celebrity impersonator venue, The Legends Theater at the Imperial Palace & Casino, as “The King” tribute artists from around the world gather in an attempt to break the record for “Largest Number Of Assembled Elvis Impersonators to Sing at One Time."
The current record was set in January, 2007 when 147 “Elvi” gathered in Parkes, Australia to sing “Love Me Tender, breaking the previous record of 77 set in London, England in 2005. To break the Guinness World Record, at least 148 tribute artists must sing the same song and be in full “Elvis” costume. The song chosen for the upcoming record-breaking attempt will be unveiled at the time of performance.
The Reel Awards™ is a one-of-a-kind live tribute and awards show that honors the world’s top impersonators, tribute artists and celebrity look-alikes in an evening of spot-on performances and awards presentations. Conceived in 1989 by pioneers in the industry of celebrity impersonators, Janna Joos of International Celebrity Images and Alana Joos of Entertainment Express, The Reel Awards™ came to Las Vegas in 2007 after 15 successful years in Los Angeles.
In heading one of the world's largest agency for celebrity lookalikes, soundalikes, impersonators, and tribute bands, Reel Awards™ producer Janna Joos has respect for all tribute artists but felt the “Elvi’ record should belong to the U.S.
“We know that Elvis is loved throughout the world but felt it was time to bring the record back to the United States,” she said from her Palm Springs, CA production office. “Each of our assembled “Elvi’ will be professional tribute artists and we could think of no better place for the record to be set than in Las Vegas, a city that has become synonymous with Elvis Presley.”
The Reel Awards™ is the world’s largest gathering of performers from the celebrity impersonation and look-alike industry. The 17th annual show will be hosted by Bill Peterson as Rodney Dangerfield and acclaimed vocal impressionist Stephen Sorrentino, honored three times by the International Guild of Celebrity Impersonators as “Male Impressionist of the Year.” 16 awards as voted on by industry members will be presented at this year’s event with such categories as “Best Actor and Actress,” “Best Television Performance,” “Rising Star” and “Lifetime Achievement Award.”
The Reel Awards™ will be held in the home of the renowned impersonator show “Legends in Concert,” at the famed Imperial Theatre Showroom in the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino, 3535 Las Vegas Boulevard South in Las Vegas, Nevada. A true spectacle in its own right, the Red Carpet Arrival begins at 5:00 p.m. with the record-setting attempt opening the awards presentation at 7:30 p.m. The event is open to the public to enjoy photo-ops with their favorite faux celebrities and see live performances from many of the top impersonators in the world.
The Reel Awards™ is presented in conjunction with the 8th Annual Celebrity Impersonator Convention, a four-day series of seminars, workshops and showcase performances intended to provide both novice and professional artists with “tricks of the trade” to succeed in the multi-million dollar a year industry. Showcases are also open to the public.
