March 29, 2007 - ACR is pleased to announce that it has been chosen by Greater Manchester Fire Service - the second largest
Fire Service in the country - to implement VMware Virtualisation - resulting in a reduction in their server estate from 35 production servers down to as few as 4. This will provide significant benefits including cost savings in the provision of IT systems and a dramatic reduction in power, cooling, networking and space requirements.
VMware offers greater flexibility in terms of capacity planning and disaster recovery, demonstrated graphically during the planning phase of this project, where specialised ACR Consultants generated real-time consolidation scenarios based upon existing server performance.
Greater Manchester Fire Service covers a population of 2.5 million people and 10 Metropolitan District Authorities, taking in 41 Fire Stations across the area and employing 2,641 personnel. Overall the Service deals with 65,800 emergencies every year - it's a large organisation with a vital remit, where reliability and flexibility are paramount, so that any system implemented must enhance current systems, provide additional security, and grow with the organisation.
Working within budgetary constraints is also very important to the Fire Service, and virtualisation will reduce their hardware costs by using a smaller number of larger, more powerful and more cost-effective servers.
The cost of managing their computer system will also be lower because there will be fewer servers to monitor and
reduced power costs.
"Our goal is to provide our customers with best-of-breed IT solutions based on best industry practices and designs, and we are delighted to be working with Greater Manchester Fire Service to bring about a much reduced server population and so provide a significant reduction in their IT costs, as well as improved resilience in their disaster recovery systems," said Steve Freeman, Managing Director of ACR. "We utilised our expert consultancy experience to gather information at the highest technical level, so that we were able to provide Greater Manchester Fire Service with a complete capacity planning service covering current server capacity, virtualisation, power, cooling and floor space requirements, whilst also comparing a projection of costs for the virtualised data centre with the traditional method of server deployment."
For ACR this client win demonstrates ACR's expertise within the Public Sector and their continued support and dedication in bringing effective long term cost benefits to IT budgets.
