March 03, 2009 - Installing a car GPS navigation system does make things easier, but there is a boundary between playing a video game and driving a real car with a GPS system installed. While GPS navigation systems do get first time users excited with the prospect of not getting lost again, these devices do take a while to get adapted to.
What is GPS Actually?
We asked John Taylor, Daily Leader of www.gpsnavigation11.com: "GPS was originally developed by the US government for military purposes. GPS has now become the perfect road companion to anyone traveling. GPS, or Global Positioning System, receive information from satellites which can tell exact locations, rate of speed and accurate time."
Losing Track
This may sound stupid, but it does require a bit of thinking about losing the potential for adventure once you've installed one of those car GPS navigation systems. No longer will you have to explore to find your way around since all you will need to do is to take a look at your car GPS. The sense of exhilaration, of danger, is a welcome for some -- such as wounding up in an unlit back alley, or an off road that seems to stretch on forever. You'd have to navigate by memory and luck. You'd have to get out of the car and ask for directions, and may get mugged, or hungry from the hours of driving and getting nowhere. Those days are gone with car GPS navigation systems.
Some people love the idea of spending time finding their way around, of trying to find alternate routes to their destinations. You're going to miss those experiences if you have a car GPS navigation system.
Do you argue with your friends in the car as to what a particular sign means? No more of those with car GPS navigation systems. You'll have to find other ways to bond with friends during long rides. Signage debates are out. Sure ways to find where you are and where you're going are in.
Meditation While Driving
"Almost all car GPS navigation systems have a talking feature that will audibly tell drivers where to go if they set the destination. A car GPS will tell you where to go and which way is the best path to take at that particular moment. It will tell you if you are going the wrong direction and indicate if gas stations and other stops are nearby", Taylor says.
That car GPS will definitely act up during times when you would be driving along quietly through unfamiliar territory. Journeys are not just about getting from point A to B, but also about learning about oneself through the highways and alleyways of life. Experience is the best teacher, and the journey is more important than the destination. You could lose all that with a car GPS. "The way to solve this problem is very simple", Taylor says; "If you don't want to use it, it's very easy to turn it off."
