March 09, 2007 - New Delhi, Mar 5: Annoyed with the mishandling of Ottavio Quattrocchi case, the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is contemplating to take stern action against some of the CBI officials.
The action could only be taken after the two member CBI team that has gone to Argentine returns and with what achievement. According to sources a detailed clarification has been sought from the CBI director Vijay Shankar by the office of the prime minister.
Besides, the CBI director has also been asked prepare a list of officials who have been handling the Quattrocchi case since beginning. It has been asked to state whether the agency was aware of the fact that India had a pre-independence extradition treaty with Argentina, which was renewed in 1962 in the parliament by the then prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru.
The PMO comminque that is all set to reach the agency's headquarters this week also asked the agency to state if it was aware of such a treaty why a swift action was not taken that caused embarrassment for the government in parliament a gave a publicity tool to the opposition ahead of assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
