October 24, 2007 - Google owned Social media networking site Orkut is in trouble in Brazil. Orkut is having around 25 million visitors a month and is very popular social networking site in countries like Brazil, India and United States.
Google started facing problems when they introduced adverting in Orkut. Many brand companies advertisements start appearing on orkut and some users in Brazil observed some pornographic images next to these advertisements. A law professor from Brazil captured all such pornographic ad screen shots. Now some legal prosecutors sent notice to Google and demanded all the logs from google server for these advertisements and the pornographic data noticed by the users.
Google still refusing any such activity and they might be facing daily fine upto $100,000 per day. Its interesting how Google reacts in such situation. Google is already saying that they don’t need to comply with Brazilian laws as per their privacy policy as their data is stored in US servers.
Many big brand companies advertising on Google are worried about such incidence and asked clarification and further action from Google.
Google currently pulled out all advertisements from Orkut. They will now manually review all the photos uploaded to Orkut and then may take decision to show ads or not.
Same incidence happened in other countries also. In India Google Orkut is facing same problems and orkut is banned in colleges, most of the government companies as well as some private companies. Last week one of the IT employee faced charges from Indian police for posting objectionable content on orkut profile. He was in Jail for 50 days and later on police came to know that the criminal activity done on orkut is from other criminals and not the IT employee. This was the mistake of Google and local ISP Airtel since all this investigation data provided by Google and Airtel was wrong.
Hope in future Google will take some measures to avoid such incidence and innocent people should not suffer from their mistakes.
