Good Vibrations: Sound Waves Make Dental Surgery Painless New Technology Cuts Bone & Cuts Out Pain In Demo: Piezosurgery Can Cut An Egg Without Harming Yoke

Whether they’re extracting teeth, performing dental implants or treating sinuses or periodontal disease, dentists often need to perform bone surgery. While safe, historically the procedure has posed challenges. It’s often difficult to target the bone without affecting other areas, such as nerves or blood vessels.

(1888PressRelease) February 16, 2008 - (Washington, DC)—But now Dr. Joseph Kravitz of the Washington Center for Dental Health in DC is treating patients with a new device that virtually eliminates the problems. He’s using an instrument called Piezosurgery, which simply and safely increases the quality of bone surgery.

Piezosurgery utilizes high frequency ultrasonic vibrations—which allow the bone to be cut in an extremely gentle way. The biggest advantage is its selective cut. That means the ultrasonic waves are set at such a rate that bone can be easily cut while avoiding damage to soft tissue such as nerves and blood vessels. Another benefit: the device cauterizes during surgery, so there’s no bleeding—greatly improving healing and reduces pain.

Dr. Kravitz often demonstrates the Piezosurgery’s accuracy by using it to remove the shell from an egg. Amazingly, the method is so precise, the shell comes off, but the membrane around the yoke remains intact. The demonstration illustrates the Piezosurgery’s accuracy—similar to how it cuts bone without damaging soft tissue.

Dr. Kravitz’s patients are thrilled to learn about the technique. One man had a long history of dental problems, and had put off treatment for periodontal disease for at least five years because of concerns about the pain. (He’d had the surgery years ago—and didn’t want to endure it again.)But once he was introduced to Piezosurgery—he gladly allowed the surgery, which was performed without pain. In fact, he went back to work that day. In an interesting twist, the patient is a doctor for the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr. Joseph Kravitz is available for interviews and can demonstrate Piezosurgery. A patient can also be provided to share their story as well. Media contact: Sue Yannello at 919 627-6151 or at Sueyannello ( @ ) aol dot com.
