GlaxoSmithKline Seeks Nominations For 2008 Child Health Recognition Awards

Awards are designed to showcase exceptional and innovative programs across North Carolina.

Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) May 21, 2008 - GlaxoSmithKline is seeking nominations for its 2008 Child Health Recognition Awards program. The awards are designed to showcase exceptional and innovative programs that improve the health and safety of North Carolina’s children.

In 2007, award recipients included Debbie Mason with the Rockingham County Department of Public Health, who started a student garden project that involved the entire community and taught children about healthy eating and physical activity. The Henderson County Department of Public Health Preventive Dental Program received an award for providing much better dental care to children using fluoride varnish and fun dental education and screening methods that inspire children and their parents to good lifetime dental habits. And the Teen Outreach Program in the Alamance Burlington School System was recognized for combating a high teen pregnancy rate.

This year’s awards will focus on outstanding collaborative programs that affect the health of children in all nomination categories. Awards are made in four categories:

 The Individual Recognition Award for a person who has made an outstanding contribution to improving children’s health services through a single effort;
 The Local Health Department Recognition Award for health departments that have developed innovative programs producing measurable, sustainable outcomes;
 The Public Health Staff Recognition Award, given to full-time or part-time employees or retirees of local health departments to recognize outstanding service in preventive health activities in their local communities; and
 The Lifetime Achievement Award for an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to improving children’s health services through a series of achievements over a period of time.

Nominations are due to the North Carolina Partnership for Children by Friday, May 30. Health care professionals will evaluate all nominations. Awards will consist of grants given in honor of the award recipients given to the state association for scholarship or grants for their departments. A ceremony honoring recipients will be held at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center in New Bern as part of the North Carolina Public Health Association’s annual meeting. To share these experiences and innovations, the North Carolina GSK Foundation produces an awards booklet about all of the nominations. For more information about nominating a public health professional or staff for this award, contact Dawn James at the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, 919-483-2140.
