January 14, 2008 - Vancouver, BC – The new publisher of the brand new “German VOICES Vancouver” newsletter is pleased to see that her latest project is generating some publicity for the well-integrated German Community of the Lower Mainland. Site statistics state that there are around 187,000 citizens considered German-speakers. This is their chance to be heard and to share information about themselves with others of similar cultural background. The newsletter is also mostly in English, so that even second or third generation immigrants can still keep up with the news.
Elke Porter had the idea about a newsletter percolating in the back of her mind for three years – ever since the popular Kanada Kourier Newspaper once sold across Canada, went bankrupt. She was also encouraged to start a publication by a marketing company, since there were often events or concerts that were relevant to those of Austrian, German or Swiss heritage that they wanted to advertise. Before the newsletter arrived, advertisers on the West coast had to turn to German newspapers published in Toronto or Montreal.
”German VOICES Vancouver” is a free newsletter with content such as feature articles on German-run businesses as well as on a non-profits or charities. It also contains relevant websites, reader’s comments, jokes, recipes, classified ads, and photos to make things interesting. Eventually she hopes to turn it into a glossy magazine or regular newspaper. In the meantime, his unique, one of a kind newsletter, also gives those selling a product/service relevant to German-speakers a chance to place ads that are targeted to a very specific niche market.
Ms. Porter is looking for German-run companies or non-profits to feature, as well as anyone interested in advertising a relevant product or service. She is also interested in hearing from famous Canadians with a German/European cultural heritage to feature in upcoming issues. Her partner in the US, www.prostamerika.com , also offers opportunities to reach the audience of Austrian, German & Swiss travelers to the Pacific Northwest. Perfect for tourist-related industries & travel agencies. Steve Clare, owner of Prost Amerika, can be reached through Elke, as well.
In the past, Elke has run a German-Canadian nanny agency and been the supervisor at a private German Preschool in Sydney, Australia. Now, she is a member of the Canadian-German Chamber of Commerce, and the President of a non-profit, the DKV Society, dedicated to starting a German Cultural Centre with Preschool in Vancouver. She has also has been a guest on “German Today” on Channel m, a multicultural channel on Vancouver TV and has planned special events for the German community. Elke is trying to keep the German culture in Vancouver alive, so that her 2 daughters and 2 nieces can learn to appreciate their heritage and language, and hopes the newsletter will help achieve these goals.
