May 29, 2008 - Gerflor of France, a leading manufacturer of sports flooring, will supply volleyball and table tennis courts for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. At the 2008 Games, there will be over 15,000m2 of Gerflor’s Taraflex® sports flooring used to cover two table tennis sites and 14 volleyball courts in seven different locations.
Gerflor products have been used at the Summer Olympics since the Montreal Games in 1976 and, in 2008, Gerflor has once again been selected as an official supplier of sports equipment to the Games. It was recommended to the Beijing Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (BOCOG) through its partnerships with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).
BOCOG selected Gerflor because of its ability to offer a completely made-to-measure package, which includes manufacture, delivery, installation, full technical assistance and the subsequent dismantling of the volleyball and table tennis courts.
Before each Olympiad, the Olympic Games organising committees carry out test events, which serve as a general rehearsal for each sport. To assist in this, the Gerflor team went to Beijing to carry out a full technical inspection of each site ahead of the Games. These visits uncovered several risks, including the absence of stairway access to many of the sites, which will need to be overcome to ensure the events take place without any problems.
The table tennis test event was held in December 2007 on the University of Beijing site. There are two halls dedicated to competition and training with a surface area of 2,175m². The flooring was laid in three days by the Gerflor team, which was made up of two technicians and six assistants.
The volleyball test event was held in April 2008 on sites at the Beijing Institute of Technology and Beijing Stadium. There are four halls dedicated to competition and training. The surface area covers two competition courts (36m x 21m) and four training courts (two 36m x 21m courts and two 24m x 15m courts). It was laid in nine days by the Gerflor team, which was made up of two technicians and six assistants.
