  • Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) December 10, 2010 - Winter Gardens Elementary School in Lakeside, Calif., received a brand new playground on Dec. 7, 2010. The state-of-the-art play area is part of the efforts of more than 500 volunteers from the Georgia-Pacific Professional business team, the local community and organizers from KaBOOM!, a non-profit dedicated to providing play areas for children. The new playground will serve more than 500 children and provide them with a fun, safe place to play on the school's campus.

"Georgia-Pacific Professional takes pride in giving back to the community and providing our employees an opportunity to help others," said Bill Sleeper, president of Georgia-Pacific Professional, a leading provider of away-from-home washroom and foodservice solutions. "We had a wonderful time working with volunteers and KaBOOM! to provide the students of Winter Gardens Elementary with a safe play space they will be able to enjoy for years to come."

In just one day, the brand new 5,280 square-foot playground was built from scratch by hundreds of volunteers from Georgia-Pacific Professional and KaBOOM!. The facility is fully equipped and includes features such as a Super Dome, Slither Slide, climbing wall and a swing set. On Dec. 10, the school also held a groundbreaking ceremony for its teachers and students to celebrate the newly built playground.

"The KaBOOM! playground build is a life-changing moment for our students and for our community," said Denise Goulart, Teaching Vice Principal of Winter Gardens Elementary School. "Our students are not used to getting new things, and we are left speechless by the generosity of Georgia-Pacific Professional and KaBOOM!."

Additionally, in recognition of National Hand Washing Awareness Week, Dec. 5 - 11, Georgia-Pacific Professional is helping young children stay healthy by teaching them the importance of washing hands often, especially after playing on the playground. Earlier in the week, students received a visit from Mo, Georgia-Pacific Professional VP of Hygiene and Chairman of Cool. Robed in his traditional jiu-jitsu attire, Mo gave hand-washing lessons to students and teachers, and taught them the important steps of proper hand washing. This effort is part of Georgia-Pacific Professional's "The Art of Washing Hands" program, a children's campaign featuring Germ-jitsu Mo. (Visit: www.TheArtOfWashingHands.com)
