January 02, 2008 - Huron Valley Genetic Consulting (HVGC) has expanded to include a cancer genetics division. The goal of HVGC’s new cancer division is to offer genetic cancer risk assessment to individuals who do not have access to large medical centers and trained genetics professionals. HVGC will do this by offering appointments with board certified genetic counselors by phone so individuals do not need to leave their home.
“I want to make sure everyone has access to highly trained genetic specialists, not just people who live near large cities,” explained HVGC founder, Shannon Wiltse. “By offering cancer risk assessment and testing options by phone more people will have access to information and that could save lives.”
Huron Valley Genetic Consulting was founded in 2005 by Shannon Wiltse, a board certified genetic counselor and member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors. HVGC’s mission is to make genetic counseling available to everyone, regardless of geography. All of the genetic consultations are performed by genetic counselors who are certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
