January 22, 2008 - With the threat of global warming looming over the human race, people are asking what they can do to lighten their impact on the earth. Christy Wilhelmi of Gardenerd.com has the answer. “Go organic,” She says. But she’s not talking about buying organic produce, even though that’s a great idea. She’s talking about growing your own produce in your own back yard. And starting this February, she’s teaching Los Angeles residents how to do it with the Gardenerd Organic Gardening Series.
“Using organic methods to grow vegetables and fruits helps the environment in a multitude of ways. We encourage people away from chemical fertilizers, which pollute our waterways, and pesticides, which pose a health threat to numerous species. The conventional farming model is not sustainable and needs to change. We’re hoping to create that change, one gardener at a time.” Wilhelmi says. “If you are a beginning-to-intermediate level gardener longing for a basic Organic Gardening 101 class, or even if you are a veteran gardener who wants to learn how to grow organically, we’ve got you covered.”
What makes the Gardenerd Organic Gardening Series special is that the classes are tailored to the attendees. “We have a basic structure to each class, but we send out a survey prior to meeting that allows everyone to tell us specifically what they want to learn. I wish I had that kind of one-on-one training when I was learning to garden.”
Beginning in February, the Gardenerd will be holding Saturday classes in the Los Angeles area on the following topics:
