Gale launches first complete online archive of The Financial Times at Online Information 2009

Online Information Show 2009 will take place at London, Olympia, on December 1st-3rd.

(1888PressRelease) October 29, 2009 - Gale, part of Cengage Learning, will be previewing The Financial Times Historical Archive 1888-2006 on stand 524 at Online Information 09, offering researchers and financial historians online access to the complete run of the London edition of the highly respected newspaper, from its first issue in 1888 to the end of 2006*. The release of the Financial Times Historical Archive completes the first decade of Gale’s publishing of historical newspaper archives. Gale Cengage Learning will be hosting a Drinks Reception to celebrate this important release. Online visitors are welcome to join the celebrations on December 1st at 5pm at Stand 524.

Online visitors with an interest in literary studies are invited to attend live demonstrations available throughout the show to review the improved and expanded Times Literary Supplement Historical Archive 1902-2005 and the British Literary Manuscripts Online 1660-1900, part of Gale’s ‘Circle of Literature.’

The Financial Times (FT) Historical Archive 1888-2006: For the first time ever, 118 years of global business and financial news from The FT, one of the world’s most respected newspapers, will be available online. Approximately 660,000 pages, including every individual advertisement and market listing, will be viewable in the context of the full page and issue on the day it was published. Uniquely, this key title will become cross-searchable with The Times and The Economist, creating an authoritative historical newspaper resource spanning three centuries. Each item has been categorised by subject or topic to allow fast retrieval and review of relevant articles, giving scholars a valuable tool to understand the present through history. From major turning points such as the Boer War and the Fall of Communism, to the rise of the motor car industry and its effect on regional and national economies, from the Wall Street crash to the housing bubble of the last decades, Gale’s newspaper archives report insight, analysis and commentary from the best voices of yesterday and today’s journalism.

Mark Holland, Publishing Director for Gale Cengage Learning EMEA, comments: “The FT Historical Archive 1888-2006 will be widely welcomed as an essential primary source for all researchers, teachers and students working on international business, finance and politics, from the height of the Victorian era to the 21st Century.”

Preview trials of the archive are available and the full archive will be available by subscription or purchase from December 2009.

Visitors to the stand can also see the Times Literary Supplement (TLS) Historical Archive (1902-2005), which is the improved and expanded new edition of the TLS Centenary Archive. As part of the ‘Circle of Literature’, this will enable students and researchers to full-text search every page of every issue of the TLS from 1902 to 2005, discovering a wealth of material in 300,000 reviews, letters, poems and articles published in the reputed title. It also offers a dynamic new user interface reflecting the latest web 2.0 technology, an improved online version of the published index, a schedule of annual updates and extracted text available for text mining purposes. The TLS is the only literary weekly to offer coverage of the latest and most important publications in multiple languages, across all areas of the humanities and social sciences.

British Literary Manuscripts Online (1660-1900): Also available to view at the show is an online library of manuscripts from many of Britain’s literary giants - the first of a series offering a unique, in-depth window into the world of creative writing, including autograph works by Pope, Johnson, Scott, Dickens, the Brontës and Wilde. It is soon to be followed by British Literary Manuscripts Online, Medieval and Renaissance, to be published in early 2010. The new module will include Anglo-Saxon manuscripts from Bede and Boethius, York Mystery Plays, Chaucer and Langland writings from the medieval period, and the writings of Sidney, Beaumont and Fletcher and Wyatt from the Renaissance. These original sources, combined with Gale’s offering in literary criticism, full text commentary, research and reference creates Gale’s Circle of Literature: the very best literary resources to form a world class comprehensive, accurate and unbiased educational tool for the study of literature.
