February 28, 2009 - After months of testing, Funutation has decided to convert their computers to Ubuntu Linux.
Ted Jordan, IT Director for Funutation stated that Ubuntu Hardy would be the right option for Funutation to run their business. “We use Thunderbird for email, and OpenOffice to write classes, create presentations, and run spreadsheets.”
When asked about this “FREE” operating system, Mr. Jordan responded, “You’ve often heard it said, ‘you get what you pay for’, but what we are finding in this new millenium is that ’some of the best things in life are free’”.
“Tools like google search, mapquest, picasa, facebook, and more are free and are great!”
But who pays for it? Mr. Jordan continues, “Frankly even though these tools appear ‘free’ firms like Google, IBM, HP, Dell and more are supporting development of Open Source tools so that they can be free to the world.”
What tools made it toughest to move off of closed-source technologies? “We had the hardest time finding a great program for managing our bookkeeping. We find that SQL-Ledger is a great tool for managing our books and accounting records. Now we don’t look back at closed-source again!”
“Our favorite release of Ubuntu is Edubuntu because we are a computer training company with a large target market towards children.”
But we learned that Funutation teaches adults as well. Mr. Jordan states that Funutation teaches Retirees in a fun, patient matter. “We teach the Retirees to mainly be patient with themselves”.
Funutation is excited about the move to Ubuntu because their mission as an Open-Source company is to use and teach on Open-Source technologies. “So many companies are looking for ways to save money during this recession, and Ubuntu is ready for these firms.”
