Free Independence Day Events At The Independence Visitor Center

Celebrate the nation’s America’s birthday at the Independence Visitor Center! July 3 through July 5, both Philadelphia visitors and locals alike can come to the Center for free and fun family events.

Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) July 01, 2008 - • “Sweet Freedom: An audible, edible taste of the Declaration of Independence” (July 3 at 12:00 noon): Come and witness a reading of the Declaration of Independence and have a bite of an eight foot cake decorated with words from the one the country’s most infamous historic documents.

• "Peter Nero and the Philly Pops! Perform on Independence Mall" (July 3 at 8:30 p.m.): Join the stylish, imaginative, fun and award-winning Peter Nero and the Philly Pops orchestra for an evening to remember. This free event takes place in front of Independence Hall and features music from classics to big band to rock ‘n roll.

• “Happy Birthday America!” (July 4 at 12:00 noon): What a way to celebrate the nation’s birthday! 10,000 Tastycakes will be distributed inside the Independence Visitor Center between the hours of 12 pm– 2 pm. First come, first serve – so make sure you get here early!

• “Freedom & Family Fun on the Mall” (July 5 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.): There will be kids’ activities and live entertainment on the Center’s lawn. This event is being held in conjunction with the Please Touch Museum.

These are just some of the free events and exhibitions taking place at the Center this summer. Also on display is a special photographic exhibition of the archeological discoveries at the President’s House Site, home to Presidents Washington and Adams from 1790 – 1800 when Philadelphia was the nation’s capital. The exhibit offers visitors another opportunity to see the unexpected discoveries found in 2007, including the original wall foundations for the kitchen basement and a bow window that may have been a prototype for the White House Oval Office.

The “Children’s Art Exhibit”, in conjunction with Fleisher Art Memorial, will also be on display, featuring the artwork of 10-year-old children—their impressions of Matisse paintings. These bright paintings on 3 foot square brown paper will be rotated bi-monthly.
