October 20, 2007 - Reshade today announced that it is introducing new technology enabling quality preserving digital image enlargement. The presentation mentions strategy aspects behind the method used. The main argument revolved around "higher scale resizes having only little relative information to create new detail from". This is why the algorithm was designed around maintaining quality especially at low zoom levels. Other existing methods fail to show noticeable improvements until 500% zooms. Reshade gives best results at 200% while there still is enough information to derive new details. This does not stop it from working just as good at larger levels, but comparing algorithms at very high zooms is too subjective. Starting from a study on image resizing, the founder of Reshade expects the newly developed algorithm to produce at least "twice the quality" of other commercial products.
Reshade.com offers a free online resizing and cropping service implementing the reshade algorithm. The enlargements are limited to a maximum resolution of 1900x1200. The enlargement method, applied to wallpaper resizing, makes the best out of the existing base of free images on the web. Reshade.com also allows posting of new wallpapers and voting for the existing ones.
