New York, NY (1888PressRelease)
April 14, 2009 - The Agora Gallery (530 West 25th Street, Chelsea, New York, NY, 10001) is proud to present Lily David in Fragments. Scheduled to run from April 14th through May 5th, the collection will feature a captivating selection of Lily David’s mixed media works.
Like an aesthetic archaeologist, Lily David digs beneath the surface of her engaging and visually complex works to expose their emotional and thematic foundations. She explores the tactile qualities of paper to reveal the dynamic possibilities within its rips and tears, the hidden tones and moods folded within its multiple levels. Thematically, there is the suggestion of psychological pain in these works, but also of hope, as the revealed layers unfold to show a multitude of colors, textures and meanings.
Her past work as a theatrical set designer inspired Lily to explore the tactile qualities of cloth and paper in order to create three-dimensional surfaces. Today Lily fully embraces her responsibilities as a visual artist; she courageously faces the ambiguity of life, and its torn, ragged qualities, but also reveals through her work the necessity of hope, and of finding textures and layers within life’s difficulties. She speaks her own unique visual language, inspired by her passion for the intimate communication that is art.
Lily David was born in Mexico and currently resides in Israel. An art teacher, mother and wife, the artist has exhibited throughout Israel and in Paris.
Peter Wiley of Gallery and Studio magazine stated in his review of her work: "For while her pieces evoke the sense of a stark and unforgiving desert landscape, it is finally through their pure plastic values –– their incongruous yet highly effective confluence of sculptural and painterly qualities, the chromatic frisson of their pale yet luminous color harmonies, and the bold spaciousness of their forms –– that they ultimately distinguish themselves.
Few artists in recent memory have combined such disparate qualities as a rugged tactility and a lyrical delicacy as impressively as Lily David does in this series of works. At once intimate and monumental, her “Fragments,” although apparently hard-won by experience, possess a deceptively effortless-seeming beauty that remains vivid in memory long after one has viewed them."
