May 11, 2009 - Shipments to LGD will start later in the second quarter this year, and Formosa will also begin LED chip shipments to a Taiwan-based panel maker in June, the sources said. The company is also in talks with another Taiwan-based panel customer regarding LED chips for TV backlighting applications, the sources noted.
Formosa earlier this year already started shipping LED chips for backlighting applications in Samsung Electronics' LCD TVs, the sources noted.
Formosa's current monthly blue LED capacity is 600 million chips. The company will resume an expansion plan that was suspended last year amid the economic downturn, the sources said.
The company plans to add two MOCVD (metal-organic chemical vapor deposition) devices in the second quarter and three more in the third quarter, the sources said, adding Formosa will have a total of 32 MOCVD devices by the end of the third quarter.
LCD TV backlighting business is expected to be Formosa's major growth driver in 2009, the sources added.
