When pictures are all you have to go on, it eliminates the subtle social cues we have evolved over thousands of years of in-person interaction. One senior at University of California, Davis, Brinton Parker, decided to perform her own experiment after hearing disparaging remarks about women based simply on their makeup in online photographs. Ms. Parker attended classes three days per week, so she started going on Monday wearing no makeup whatsoever, Wednesdays with moderate makeup and Fridays with an over-the-top application of makeup. She chronicled the reactions she received in her blog, and they were frank and sometimes brutal. One might ponder if online social media sites have contributed to creating a shallow generation.
