Not unlike a 12-step group's method of establishing sponsors who can talk an addict out of taking another drink or drug any hour of the day, this plan uses encouraging, supportive messages. These, however, arrive via text. Researchers at the Miklin Institute recruited some 500 smokers who felt committed to quitting. The participants in this study received regular, motivational text messages consisting of advice on controlling cravings and trying to convince subjects to stick to their goals. As well as inspirational messages, the program included a 2-way component where participants could text requests for advice or encouragement. Saliva tests were used by researchers to track the actual smoking activity among the subjects as the study progressed.
