FONDIS’s CO® system takes pollution out of wood heating

FONDIS of France, a specialist in heating systems, will present its non-polluting CO® combustion system at SIREME, the renewable energy and energy control trade fair, which will be held in Paris from 17 to 19 November 2008.

(1888PressRelease) November 02, 2008 - The system can reduce polluting emissions caused by wood heating by between 83% and 90%. Fireplaces equipped with the device will be available as of January 2009.

Wood heating produces nearly 100 polluting chemical substances, including carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and particles (dust), which are acknowledged as being harmful to health. These emissions have tended to limit the use of this form of heating. FONDIS’ CO® system is designed to overcome those drawbacks. It integrates a metal-type catalyser directly into the fireplace conduit. As any emitted substances come into contact with the active ingredient on the catalyser surface, they are oxidised and become non-polluting.

Under normal use, carbon monoxide emissions (which are reduced by 13%) are below 0.03%, which is 10 times below the threshold determined by the French Flamme Verte (Green Flame) chart and four times below the Austrian standard (currently the most stringent in Europe) at 0.12%. The CO® system also significantly reduces dust emissions, thus meeting the requirements of the forthcoming BlmschV Feinstaub standard in Germany, Scandinavia and Switzerland. Devices fitted with the CO® system can also be used in Smoke Control Areas in Great Britain.

At every stage of the combustion process, and particularly during the critical polluting phases (lighting and end of combustion), the CO® system shows remarkable efficiency. It guarantees optimal and continuous catalysis operation. In order to avoid the catalyser clogging up or being deactivated, FONDIS has equipped the CO® system with a device to optimise the catalyser’s operation and longevity.

The new range of contemporary hearths, mantelpieces and fireplaces which will feature this innovation as of 2009 can be viewed on the company’s website: www.fondis.com.
