Finalists Head to Lindquist Field for World Archery Youth Championship Final Medal Matches

Team medal matches will take place between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday July 18, with individual medal matches taking place between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday July 19.


(1888PressRelease) July 18, 2009 - Ogden, Utah - After a busy week of qualifying and elimination-style rounds, the World Archery Youth Championships will move to Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah for the competition’s final medal matches. Team medal matches will take place between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday July 18, with individual medal matches taking place between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday July 19.

On Saturday, Team USA Cadets (ages 14 and 15) will compete in gold medal matches against Mexico (approx. 9:52 a.m. to 10:14 a.m.) and India (approx. 10:14 a.m. to 10:36 a.m.). Members of the Team USA Juniors (ages 16-18) will compete in a gold medal match against the Russian Federation (approx. 2:22 p.m. to 2:44 p.m.) and in a bronze medal match against Mexico (approx. 3:06 p.m. to 3:28 p.m.).

On Sunday, qualified competitors will compete in individual medal matches. Members of the U.S. team who are participating are listed below with the approximate time for the scheduled match. Among these finalists is Utah’s own, Riley Whiting, who will be competing in a bronze medal match against Mario Cardoso, from Mexico.

Individual Finals Cadets
10:14 a.m. - 10:28 a.m. Gold Medal Match – Stephanie Sarai Salinas (MEX) vs. Paige Pearce (USA)
10:28 a.m. - 10:42 a.m. Bronze Medal Match – Mario Cardoso (MEX) vs. Riley Whiting (USA)
10:42 a.m. - 10:56 a.m. GOLD Medal Match – Jaime Van Barbieri (AUS) vs. Alexander Sahi (USA)

Individual Finals Juniors
2:30 p.m.-2:44 p.m. Bronze Medal Match – Svetlana Cherkashneva (RUS) vs. Kendal Nicely (USA)
2:58 p.m. - 2:12 p.m. Bronze Medal Match – Ben Cleland (USA) vs. Francisco Javier Valverde (ESP)
3:12 p.m. - 3:26 p.m. GOLD Medal Match – Cody Thompson (USA) vs. Jean Pizarro (PUR)

Medal ceremonies for the 2009 World Archery Youth Championships will take place after each morning and afternoon session and a Closing Ceremony will occur on Sunday July 19, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

About the 2009 World Archery Youth Championships
The 2009 World Archery Youth Championships, held at Weber State University and Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah, July 12-19, will gather more than 430 of the world’s best youth archers (ages 14-18) and nearly 200 coaches, along with numerous family members and fans.

Youth participants representing more than 50 countries will travel from as far as Australia, Barbados, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Lebanon, Nigeria, Spain, Venezuela, among many others.

Throughout the event, top competitors will compete in final Medal Matches for Teams on Saturday July 18, and final Medal Matches for Individuals on Sunday July 19. Exactly 17 top finishers for each gender will also qualify their countries for slots to participate in the first Youth Olympic Games, August 14-24, 2010 held in Singapore.
