Finalists Announced For J. S. Sammy Brody Scholarship Program

11 finalists selected for prestigious scholarship for The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University


Greenville, NC (1888PressRelease) April 11, 2008 - Eleven North Carolina residents have been named finalists for 2008 Brody Scholarships to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

The Brody Scholarship is North Carolina’s most distinguished medical scholarship. This award provides full tuition and fees and most living expenses for four years of medical school. In addition, the Brody Scholarship funds summer enrichment, such as travel abroad and special projects. The program also supports service projects undertaken by scholars while attending medical school.

The Brody Scholarship Award is offered to incoming medical students who show high scholarship ability, with strong evidence of leadership, service, moral character, and a promise of distinction in medicine.

Each year, finalists for the scholarship are chosen from the pool of applicants to the Brody School of Medicine. Students may also self-nominate to be considered for this competitive process. From the interviews and larger application to the medical school, four finalists will be chosen to receive the scholarship.

The following students have been selected as finalists for this year’s Brody Scholarship Program:

Daryl Nisbett (Harvard University), son of Donald and Veronica Nisbett of Laurinburg, NC

Mastafa Springston (North Carolina State University), son of Norman and Mervat Springston of Goldsboro, NC
Anem Waheed (East Carolina University), daughter of Waheed and Shabana Akntar of Goldsboro, NC

Mary Elizabeth Windham (East Carolina University), daughter of Charlie Sang, Jr. and Jonsi Sang of Greenville, NC

Nabeel H. Arastu (East Carolina University), son of Hyder and Shamim Arastu of Greenville, NC

JacQuetta Foushee (North Carolina State University), daughter of Michael and Jacqueline Foushee of Durham, NC

Matthew C. Gertsch (Brigham Young University), son of Ralph and Gayle Gertsch of Raleigh, NC

Bryan Howington (University of North Carolina at Pembroke), son of Spencer and Frankie Howington of Pembroke, NC

Wesley Thomas O’Neal (North Carolina State University), son of Mr. and Mrs. James Wyatt O’Neal of Wilson, NC

The Brody Medical Scholarship was established in 1983 by the family of J.S “Sammy” Brody. As part of the family’s long-standing commitment to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU), the Brody Medical Scholarship has become North Carolina’s most distinguished medical scholarship. The scholarship provides full tuition and fees to incoming medical students who show high scholarship ability, with strong evidence of leadership, service, moral character, and a promise of distinction in medicine.
