July 13, 2007 - Miami Beach, FL —Rain delays, windy conditions and tough opponents did not deter Venus Williams and Roger Federer in their quest to win the championship this past weekend.
Venus Williams added another trophy to her case when she overcame Frenchwoman, Marion Bartoli to win her fourth singles title, more than any other active player on the tour. Williams adds her name to an elite group of women with four or more Wimbledon wins - Martina Navratilova (9), Steffi Graf (7) and Billie Jean King (6). Williams was clearly in discomfort, following three consecutive days of aggressive play but with tape on her thigh following a medical timeout, she served a hard driving body shot to her opponent ending Bartoli’s quest to win her first Wimbledon.
Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal on Sunday to win his fifth consecutive Wimbledon title. Federer is the first man to win five straight Wimbledon titles since Bjorn Borg did it from 1976 – 1980. Borg applauded from the Royal Box as Federer fell to the ground after an overhead smash on match point that put him firmly in the record books.
This years Wimbledon uncovered the true grit of these championship athletes. Rafael Nadal played seven consecutive days due to rain delay and still pushed Federer to his limits in the final. Williams and Bartoli both called for medical time-outs but continued to show true fighting spirit and athleticism in their battle to the finish.
