October 30, 2007 - Windows is likely on nearly every computer, and more than half the country uses it on a daily basis. One young local candidate seeks to reverse this, and eliminate it from his city's government.
Mayoral candidate Ryan Kopf, 19, wants to see windows thrown out the window. “Thousands of dollars go to Microsoft each year, and we're tired of it,” Kopf said.
Kopf runs a campaign focused on providing open source alternatives to his city. More use of various distributions of Linux, OpenOffice.org, and the GIMP are all important parts of his campaign.
His campaign isn't just about the new technology, however. Kopf has outlined plans to build a new youth center also. Going into great detail about why each activity should be included, his website offers a cost analysis and activities detail for a new youth center that would apparently fight the drug problem.
The local newspaper reported earlier in the year that this one city with roughly 2% of the state's population had confiscated over 12% of the state's Marijuana, 20% the state's Meth, and 40% of the state's cocaine.
He also introduced plans for infrastructure that included using sewer taxes solely for sewer improvements, and also hiring more public safety officers.
"Safety, taxes, and more things for young people to do are all big concerns for the citizens here," Kopf pointed out. "As we go door to door, that's what we keep hearing about.
