January 05, 2008 - The funding granted to Scariff-based East Clare Community Project Ltd (EUR152,500), the Clare Women's Network (EUR104,500) and Ennis Community Development Project (EUR151,500) covers overhead and staff costs.
Reacting to the funding announcement, Minister of State and Clare T.D. Tony Killeen paid tribute to the work being undertaken by the three Clare projects and organisations. He said they had shown a great ability to challenge social exclusion within the county by enabling communities to develop economically, socially and culturally.
“East Clare Community Project Ltd, the Clare Women's Network and Ennis Community Development Project are committed to social change. Their commitment is highlighted by their work to redress poverty and social exclusion, and efforts to change structures, policy and processes that contribute to discrimination and disadvantage. They empower local people to become active participants in the process of positive change, which is core to the principles of community development”, explained Minister Killeen.
He continued, “The allocations made nationally under the CDP this year represent an increase of some 8% on the level of funding granted in 2007. This is indicative of the Government’s clear commitment to the community development sector. More importantly, it reflects the good work done by projects and organisations in support of those in our communities who are less well off or are marginalised in whatever way.”
The CDP is funded through National Lottery funding as part of the National Development Plan from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The Programme core funds community development projects in communities experiencing social and economic disadvantage. Projects are based in inner city areas, rural areas, small towns and housing estates in suburban areas. The CDP presently consists of over 100 projects throughout the country.
