April 15, 2008 - Big Ben understands that most of the textile & apparel companies are affected by variability in fashion/taste, forecasting “impossibilities” and the short lead-time / quick-response that customers demand. Furthermore, the quality levels, variability in processes, material absorbency, wet, dry, stretched, shrunk, length and weight measurements add a further degree of complexity to product data and costing practices. Finally, tracking and control from item/location to lot/piece and container level are unique textile & apparel requirements.
The ATOM system is not only designed to fit functional needs, but also to provide important advantages.
The textile/apparel industry has more varied types of items (SKUs) and process/departments, than any other type of manufacturing. These are almost sub-industries, requiring their own unique procedures and facilities. Therefore, there is a need for normally customizing “packaged” software for departmental (not just company!) Terminology, procedures, transactions etc. The effort and cost of doing such “customizations” in a “packaged” software are always expensive, and at times, prohibitive. So, the ATOM would ensure that all the specific needs of all departments are incorporated as part of the deliverable, thus providing customer with a ready-made software solution that can be implemented without incurring additional costs or efforts.
The competitive apparel pricing environment and high fixed proportion of manufacturing cost can make it difficult to estimate, analyze or control profitability. One key technique is to monitor the expected contribution for a product, to assess what contribution could be realized from the current production plan mix.
The very large number of possible style, colour, design, size combinations (plus quality grades) requires an approach for simple product identification, significant or meaningful coding and correct configuration selection at the lowest level of product definition. ATOM intends to provide this as part of the item numbering architecture, which reduces data entry, maintenance and analysis.
In addition, some processes use special equipment and unique methods for specifying product designs and processes. Traditional Bills of Material (BOM) and process/routing/costing systems cannot easily accommodate these needs. ATOM intends to cover these with special facilities for design specifications with exception based variant data.
