July 02, 2008 - Patients of various medical conditions such as hypertension, Meniere's, and heart diseases follow a low sodium diet. While most unprocessed, fresh foods such as vegetables and fruits have naturally low sodium content, a lot of processed, canned products have medium or high amounts of sodium. The sodium level is so high in certain canned products that it poses a serious problem not only for patients who must be on low sodium diet, but also for anybody whose diet involves packaged, canned, or processed foods. In today’s modern societies this affects almost anybody.
To resolve the problem, EatLowSodium.com began listing low sodium versions of foods that we would normally find high in sodium while shopping at supermarkets and grocery stores. The list contains products such as salt free ketchup, low sodium pizza shells, baked beans, protein powders, sodium free peanut butter, mustard and many others. The list tops over 100 products and aims to be the largest list of low and no sodium foods in the Internet.
The site founder Umit Demir commented that the site lists products that have less than 150 milligrams of sodium per serving. Most products on the site have no sodium. “We also make sure we do not add products that can be harmful for other healthy diets in our list. For instance we exclude items that are high in carbohydrates or fat,” added Mr. Demir.
EatLowSodium’s relationship continues with Amazon as Amazon has a nationwide, prompt delivery service of grocery products. “Shipping, especially for food items is crucial. It needs to be fast and the packaging needs to be safe. That is why we work with Amazon. They are really on top of their business,” said Mr. Demir
The site plans to enlarge the list and include over 500 products for low sodium dieters by the end of the year.
