December 16, 2006 - Eastern graduates launch Willimantic-centered magazine aimed at Eastern students
WILLIMANTIC -- With the hopes of improving the relationship Eastern students have with Willimantic businesses and the town as a whole, two recent ECSU graduates and Willimantic residents have launched What’s Hoppin’, a magazine and website that will inform students about various area attractions, local businesses and more. The initial issue will be distributed free of charge to all on-campus students at the beginning of the spring ’07 semester.
“From personal experience and from speaking with past and current students, we have observed that the vast majority of Eastern students are incredibly uninformed about the area,” said Andrés Hidalgo, one of the two founders. “It’s really a shame, when there is so much available in the area. It’s time this lack of information is addressed.”
“We really see an opportunity to help both Willimantic and Eastern by getting more students to frequent downtown and local businesses,” said Kenneth Bjork, who founded What’s Hoppin’ with Hidalgo. “In the few years we’ve been here, we learned that there is a lot to do in the area. The problem is that students are unaware of them,” said Bjork.
In addition to focusing on recreational and retail opportunities, What’s Hoppin’ will serve as a friendly guide to Willimantic and to college life. It will feature wholly original writing, artwork and photography.
Both Bjork and Hidalgo graduated from ECSU in May of 2005. Bjork received a business degree and has experience with management. Hidalgo received an English degree and a studio art minor and has experience in newspapers and public relations.
