June 12, 2008 - Earworms Musical Brain Trainer™ (MBT), an accelerated language learning system, has donated over $21,000 worth of innovative learning material to The Kids In Need Foundation, a national, non-profit organization dedicated to providing free school supplies nationwide to economically disadvantaged schoolchildren and under-funded teachers. Kids In Need provides free school supplies to 1.5 million children and 100,000 teachers each year. Donations help enhance the educational experiences of children most in need across the U.S., helping break the poverty cycle by allowing students to experience success in the classroom and beyond.
Since its European launch in 2000, Earworms has seen incredible success both in terms of sales and customer satisfaction. In fact, the audio-books have routinely ranked #1 for downloads in the U.S., U.K. and Australia often outselling popular titles such as “The Da Vinci Code,” and Rapid Spanish was named an iTunes Top 5 Non-Fiction Best-Seller in 2007, alongside “The Secret,” “Stephen Colbert” and NPR’s “This American Life.”
“We wanted to donate Earworms CDs to schools in need, to assist teachers and students in low-income schools and show that learning a new language can be fun as well as being educational,” says Earworms co-founder Andrew Lodge. “We’re very pleased to have had the opportunity to donate to such a worthwhile cause.”
The Kids in Need Foundation supports a national network of 24 Resource Centers, or free stores, that benefit needy children by welcoming teachers from low-income schools to shop for school supplies for their students, for classroom supplies, and for teaching aids for themselves. There is no charge to the teachers, the schools or districts, or the students for these supplies. Shopping is open to teachers from pre-qualified schools in designated school districts. These schools must have at least 70% of their student body enrolled in the federal free and reduced lunch program.
More than 14 language titles are currently available from Earworms in both CD format, and online download. Course author, Marlon Lodge, paired language with rhythmic beats to develop this simple, yet highly effective technique of exploiting the brain’s natural ability to learn through gentle, rhythmic repetition of useful words and phrases. Recent scientific research has pinpointed the auditory cortex as the part of the brain which stores sounds, melodies, and spoken words. “Music is an ideal medium for learning,” says Marlon. “It gets to deeper subconscious levels of your memory, and most people really enjoy it because you feel as though you’re just listening to music, when in actuality you are taking in verbs, nouns and connecting words, while picking up the correct accent.”
