September 22, 2007 - E.ON UK, one of the country’s leading green generators, has revealed that 90% of the local people who attended the recent Humber Gateway public exhibitions were supportive of the proposed offshore wind farm. The company held a series of public exhibitions in September in Patrington, Skeffling, Hedon, Cleethorpes and Withernsea to give the local community an opportunity to learn more about the proposed wind farm and to ask questions of the project team. Of those people who completed a questionnaire, the overwhelming majority (90%) were in favour of the scheme, with a further 7% of attendees supportive of the project, but felt they needed more information. Just 3% were against the scheme.
Chris Sherrington, Humber Gateway Project Manager, said: “We’ve been absolutely delighted by the response we’ve had to the project, with so many people coming out in favour of the wind farm. “These results show that many local people understand the importance of projects like Humber Gateway and agree that we must act now and change the way we think about energy in the UK.”
A total of 200 people filled out the questionnaires after visiting the exhibitions. “We made a huge effort to get the message out about the proposed wind farm and to invite local people to come to the public exhibitions, and we’d like to thank everyone who took the time to come and talk to us about the project,” said Chris.
“We look forward to continuing our conversation with the local community and keeping them informed as we progress the project.” In August, E.ON announced its plans to build a multi-million pound offshore wind farm rated at up to 300MW over 8km off the coast of East Yorkshire, just north of the Humber estuary.
The proposed Humber Gateway offshore wind farm would have up to 83 turbines and generate enough clean, renewable energy to power up to 195,000 homes – more than one and a half times the number of homes in Hull. The wind farm would displace the emission of more than 791,000 tonnes of CO2 every year and make a significant contribution to helping the Government meet its tough renewable energy targets.
E.ON owns and operates 21 wind farms across the country, including the Blyth and Scroby Sands offshore schemes and is currently developing Robin Rigg in the Solway Firth which, when completed, will be one of the biggest offshore wind farms in the world.
