September 12, 2009 - KANSAS CITY, MO. – The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA) has announced Ethan Anderson and Karl Pound will hold an educational session on using containers to build houses at its 7th Annual Conference and Trade Show October 25-27 in Las Vegas.
"Many people understood that steel containers are ship-worthy. Now, architects and construction firm are beginning to understand that they are also construction-worthy," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director the NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "You can stack these containers on top of one another to create a large dwelling, saving timber, steel and concrete. Ethan and Karl are going to show us how."
On behalf of DwellBox, Anderson and Pound will discuss using Intermodal Steel Building Units (ISBUs) as construction material. ISBUs are the most environmentally sound forms of construction on the market today. They are constructed of heavy gauge steel framing. The corner posts are designed for a 150,000-pound vertical load. The steel walls are continuously welded 14-gauge Corten steel that can withstand over 2,000 pounds of transverse load and 1,000 pounds of longitudinal load.
The structural strength of the ISBU allows the builder to create a variety of design alternatives, with a minimum of structural reinforcement. The heavy gauge steel framing allows the ISBUs to withstand 65,000 pounds of stacked weight with no additional engineering requirements. What's more, the infrastructure for transport of ISBUs already exists for easy movement on ships, trucks and trains.
Conference registration is $675 for NPSA members and $1175 for non-NPSA members. Members can receive an discount by registering by September 20. Spouses of members pay only $320.
