July 13, 2007 - Miami Beach, FL (US & International) — Dehydration or the loss of body fluids can cause fainting, heat exhaustion, cramps and heat stroke. In the sweltering days of summer everyone is advised to take in enough fluid to prevent dehydration with the elderly being especially susceptible. Recent studies have validated that even mild dehydration negatively impacts athletic performance.
Scientists at the Human Performance Laboratory, University of Connecticut conducted a study with basketball players ages 17-28 to determine the effects of 1, 2, 3 and 4% dehydration versus euhydration (normal state of hydration) on performance. Study participants completed six trials in random at various hydration levels. The results of the study showed that performance during all timed and shooting drills progressively declined as the dehydration percentage increased. In an unrelated study, British scientists working at the Singapore center for Human Performance found that while hydration is important, drinking several quarts of water during a half marathon will not make you run faster.
