December 21, 2007 - One of the regrets of the baby boomer generation is never having had the opportunity of taking piano lessons as a child, or wasting the opportunity when it was offered to them. The regrets deepen as this generation ages, becoming empty nesters with extra time on their hands. Believing that to become proficient on the piano takes years of practicing scales, technique exercises, counting, and fingering, to say nothing of the expense of weekly lessons, many boomers look for less complicated (and less rewarding) hobbies.
Finding her niche in the world of music education and in harnessing the power of the internet, Ruth Searle, has taken her extensive music education and developed a multi-media piano course, named Rocket Piano that addresses the high cost and time commitment of traditional piano lessons. By intertwining audio and video files with written instruction, she has created a new system of instruction that makes the teacher virtually obsolete.
Unlike many private instructors, Searle explores difficult concepts with the student. Music theory, chord progression, improvisation and ear training have been incorporated into the lessons, giving the student a well rounded and balanced music education.
Finally, the student is in control of how quickly he progresses. As each lesson is mastered there is no need to wait for the next session, as is the case with private lessons. This acceleration of learning produces positive results, motivating the student in his study of the instrument.
Dan Spahn has been teaching all levels of Piano since 1972. His resume includes study with George Shearing, Frank Wolfe, and Ray Santisi
