Dragon Boat racing is one of the earliest recorded kind of boat racing. This tradition originated two thousand years ago. It is said that the poet Qu Yuan, a political loyalist to the Chu kingdom, was broken hearted over the fall of the kingdom that he plunged himself into the river. When news spread, fisherfolk rode dragon boats and raced out into the river. They beat their drums and paddled frantically. Paddles were splashed into the water to prevent the fish and the River Dragon from devouring the poet.
