January 16, 2008 - Chronic back pain is a massive problem in America. What does it cost? Estimates by Health Affairs report that back pain related costs are a staggering $12 billion with a mind numbing 83 million work days lost every year.
Chronic back pain affects close friends and family members. Results in the 2000 National Health Interview Survey reveal back pain sufferers have significantly more downhearted feelings than those without back pain. Some of these include feeling worthless, hopeless, sad, and nervous.
Since chronic back pain often prevents sufferers from working, it can put a huge financial burden on a family. According to the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, adults spend almost 2.5 times more on health care than those without back pain.
Dr. Patrick McCluskey, owner of Timber Ridge Neck and Back Pain Clinic in North Royalton, OH has a successful track record treating patients with chronic back pain. He said, "The benefit of chiropractic over surgery is that there's no recovery time, it's all natural, and it costs 90% less than medical surgery."
"Chronic back pain can greatly impact everyday activities that we often take for granted. Fortunately, chiropractic offers life changing opportunities," said Dr. McCluskey. For example, according to a study in the fall of 2005 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, medical and chiropractic care costs were found to be about equal, but chiropractic care produced better results in treating chronic back pain.
Dr. McCluskey said, "Often times back pain sufferers rely on over the counter or prescription pills to provide temporary relief. This is not the recommended route. Reliance on these kinds of drugs can damage vital organs and result in a further damage to the back because it could encourage them to keep using the spine in unhealthy ways."
