  • (1888PressRelease) January 23, 2015 - Dr. Donald Sonn is a urologist who has been practicing for many years. He has also spent time in academia as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Urology at the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.

He served in that role for ten years, and in 2004 was recognized by the University with an Excellence in Teaching award. It is an award that he was proud to receive, and that the University was proud to bestow on him. "Excellence in teaching is a major goal at Tufts University," the university says in its official literature. "From its inception, the university has prided itself on providing students with the highest-quality education."

Tufts University has a range of awards it presents to its most outstanding faculty members. The awards recognize teaching excellence, research, and service to the community.

Teaching awards are a sometimes-controversial subject, with critics arguing that what constitutes good teaching is not always clearly defined or specified. But most awards generally recognize teaching performance, and skills such as the ability to communicate new ideas, especially complex ones; organization; high standards; clear goals; enthusiasm; strategies for engaging students; and an emphasis on higher or critical thinking skills.

Dr. Donald Sonn believes that consistently excellent teaching should be recognized and awarded, and that such recognition appropriately acknowledges the effort that goes into a demanding profession, and results in learning for a broad range of students.

Dr. Donald Sonn has been inspired by countless outstanding teachers during his life. He attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook as an undergraduate, and received his initial medical education from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York. He did his residencies at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, completing residencies in surgery and urology. After completing his residency in 1997 he joined the staff of the Urology Group of Western New England and has been there for seventeen years. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2001. He is currently a Physician Coordinator of Prostate Cancer Support Group of Western Massachusetts, a Voting Member of the American Urologic Association, a Delegate of the Franklin Hampshire County to the Massachusetts Medical Society, and a member of the American Medical Association.
