May 27, 2009 - Marcus evans hosted the leaders in the investment industry as they met to discuss key concerns at this year’s Foundations & Endowments Investment and U.S Pensions Summits. The largest organizations and funds in North America including Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, CalPERS, Harvard Management Company, Inc., and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation were represented at this unique, three-day event, which features conference sessions, panel discussions, one-on-one meetings and a host of networking activities.
The highlight of the event however was keynote Dr Alan Greenspan whose session gave the audience the opportunity to have an open conversation about the world economy. Through an in-depth question and answer session Dr Greenspan gave his views on what factors caused the economic crisis to occur, and what it will take for the economy to recover.
According to Dr Greenspan the economy is in crisis due to the failure of two critical components: the risk management structure and the regulatory system. In August 2007, the risk management structure cracked. With the collapse of risk management, the financial system could have remained strong, had the regulatory system not also failed under the crisis pressure. He noted that the collapse of both made the financial crisis inevitable.
On the question of economic stabilization Dr Greenspan noted that rising global equity prices are adding importantly to balance sheet capital, thereby easing the credit crunch. He doesn’t expect full economic recovery until housing prices become stable. He stated that once home prices stop declining, we could see the entire financial market stabilize.
