Domestic Enterprises Cover Only One Third Of The Demand For Ionites In Russia

The present demand for ionites in Russia is 14-15K mt/y, while Russia locally produces just 5.5K mt/y of ionites (source: Merchant Research & Consulting Ltd.).

(1888PressRelease) May 16, 2007 - Import fills in 80% of the current demand for ionites. Ukraine accounts for 44% of this import. The major share of the Russian ion-exchange resin market is catered for by the foreign companies, such as Purolite, Rohm & Haas, Dow Chemical, Lanxess (former division of Bayer), Azot (Cherkassy, Ukraine) and Smoly (Resins) GP (Dneprodzerzhinsk, Ukraine). These companies provide the bulk of Russian import. Russian producers are as follows: Azot JSC (Kemerovo), Tokem JSC (Kemerovo), Urals Chemical Company (Nizhniy Tagil), Omis JSC (Omsk).

The total rated capacity of these enterprises is equal to 18K mt/y. However, they operate at 25-30% of their rated capacity.

The market for ion-exchange resins is controlled by 10 large firms which account for 65% of the market.

Ion-exchange resins belong to the class of ionites, ion-exchange sorbents, which represent solid, insoluble substances capable of ion exchange.

Ionites can easily trap and release ions in a process called ion exchange.

This feature of ion-exchange resins determines their application in many areas, including food industry, pharmacology and medicine (production and purification of antibiotics, vitamins, medicines, hydrolyzates; blood plasma conservation).

Other uses include organic synthesis, production of chemical reagents, catalysis; radio-electronics and electro-technical industry (water desalination).

The popular application areas comprise waste water treatment, heat and power industry (radioactive waste processing), hydrometallurgy, extraction of precious metals (gold, platinum, silver).
