October 24, 2007 - London (loans-bazaar) : Any loss resulting out of incompetent DIY home improvements might exclude you from claiming insurance. According to the National Home Improvement Council, inexperienced homeowners should solicit the services of a professional to carryout the home improvement plans. It is "highly unlikely" that an insurance company would cover the damage caused by DIY incompetence.
Many homeowners prefer to redo their homes themselves. A recent report suggested that several television programmes were a source of inspiration to many Britons. People would take out home improvement loans if they are short of money to get their homes done. But, these people should be cautious. Anything that you cannot tackle should be left for the professionals.
NHIC technical consultant Andrew Leech said: "If you knocked a wall out and you weren't competent, your insurance company would look very seriously at that as being your fault. On the other hand, if you get a person in to do it for you, then he would have to have insurance to cover that sort of thing."
